An Old Bird Feeder
We have an old bird feeder. One I bought as a gift for my wife many years ago. The first real cold snap came through, so I went to fill it up. Every so often I have to make repairs. It’s the wooden kind. Left natural on the sides with a faded black roof with indents to mimic roofing shingles. The roof also acts as a lid to move aside when filling with seeds. As I went to fill it, a bit of the roof gave way and split at a glue line. I don’t mind fixing it as the birds seem to enjoy it.
Lots of beautiful birds visit us in the morning. Cardinals, Blue Jays, Sparrows, Finches and sometimes a yellow bird with black markings can be seen, maybe an Oriole? An occasional squirrel visits which at first seems a nuisance but if observed seems to be a boon for the smaller birds as it shakes the feeder and gives them a shot at some fallen food.
Surely joining each other at the little wooden feeder isn’t necessary for their survival. I’m sure the squirrel has a secret stash of acorns, the birds pick the shrub berries off the frost of the morning grass. But it is nice to get together with the other wildlife, even for a brief while. A shared moment in the morning.
Seeing a fresh snack as they rise in the morning must be a comfort and evidence that someone was thinking of them as they are greeted with a Good Morning.
We aren’t that different after all...
