What Are Antioxidants?
Antioxidants are molecules that fight what they call free radicals.
Those free radicals are compounds that can cause harm to your body if their levels become too high. They are linked to multiple illnesses, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
Your body has its own antioxidant defenses to keep those free radicals in check. However, antioxidants are also found in food especially in fruits, vegetables, and other plant-based whole foods. Coffee was found to have even more antioxidants than most fruits. Organic coffee beans grown at high altitudes and close to the equator have the highest levels. The best way to get the highest levels in your coffee, is to drink it black. A study done in Croatia showed that even a touch of half and half will reduce the antioxidants levels. If you prefer adding flavor, you can add organic cinnamon or organic vanilla. To prolong the high level of antioxidants, try to grind the beans as you go and store them in an air tight container.
